About
Bess Egerton (she/her), known by her artist name Hag, is a Magandjin/Brisbane-based producer, recording engineer, songwriter, session musician and multi-instrumentalist. Drawn to warm, nostalgic sounds, intricate layered arrangements and the raw character, Bess makes music that feels human.
As a producer and engineer, Bess works across genres and approaches the studio as a musician first. Her production work includes projects with The Ra Ta Tas, Leevai and Hati, alongside her self-produced music as Hag and Red Hill. Moving comfortably between the control room and the instruments themselves, she draws on her experience across guitar, bass, vocals, keys and trumpet to shape arrangements, performances and recordings from the inside out.
Since 2020, Bess has performed more than 250 shows across Australia, working with artists including Red Hill, Hayley Marsten, Phia Scott, Lighthouse Mouse, Leevai, Georgie Taylor, Mogdalene, THE ZON and many more. Her live and session experience stretches across indie, folk, pop, rock, alternative, grunge, punk, electronic and dance music. As a founding member, lead singer and guitarist of Red Hill, she has also toured nationally with Ball Park Music and Alex Lahey, developing her own approach to songwriting, performance and self-production.
Hag is Bess's space for songwriting, production and experimentation. Her music explores the warm, nostalgic and layered side of her creative instincts, balancing careful production with moments that feel immediate and imperfect. Drawing inspiration from artists and producers including Sam Evian, Clairo, Anna Laverty, Jack Antonoff and Steve Albini, her work as Hag has grown from early home recordings into an evolving catalogue of self-produced releases, with her track "Vashti" nearing 400,000 streams.
Collaboration and inclusivity are central to Bess's wider practice. She is committed to creating safe, supportive creative environments where women, LGBTQIA+ and gender-diverse artists feel comfortable experimenting and expressing themselves freely. Her professional development has included APRA AMCOS Equalize, the Airlock Studios Immersive Program and involvement with the Australian Women in Music Awards.
